Benefits of Acupuncture

What are the Benefits of Acupuncture Therapy?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic practice originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. The benefits of acupuncture is to promote the bodies healing powers and restore balance.

How Acupuncture Works

The practice is based on two primary concepts: stimulating the body’s natural healing processes. Acupuncture points, or acupoints, are selected based on the individual’s symptoms and diagnosis. By stimulating these points, acupuncture is thought to stimulates the bodies natural healing power.

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture is believed to work through several mechanisms which promote several health benefits of acupuncture:

  1. Neurological Effects: The insertion of needles stimulates sensory nerves, which send signals to the brain and spinal cord. This process can release neurotransmitters such as endorphins and serotonin, which are natural pain relievers and mood enhancers.
  2. Blood Flow Improvement: Acupuncture has been shown to increase local blood circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to tissues and aiding in the removal of waste products.
  3. Immune and Hormonal Modulation: Acupuncture may influence the body’s immune system and hormonal levels, promoting relaxation and reducing inflammation.
  4. Pain Gate Control Theory: According to this theory, acupuncture may “close the gate” in the nervous system, blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain.

Benefits of Acupuncture and Applications:

Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including:

  • acute and chronic pain (e.g., back pain, migraines)
  • stress
  • anxiety
  • insomnia

The Acupuncture Process

During a session, the acupuncturist conducts an initial evaluation, which may include questions about health history, a physical examination, and assessments of the tongue and pulse. These diagnostic tools help the practitioner identify imbalances and other health concerns.

Once the treatment begins, ultra-thin needles are gently inserted into the skin at specific acupoints. These needles are much thinner than those used for injections, making the process relatively painless. The needles are typically left in place for 15–30 minutes, during which time patients often feel relaxed and calm. Techniques such as manual needle stimulation or the use of heat (moxibustion) may also be applied to enhance the treatment.
